A deadly overnight shooting in Denton, Texas, led to the arrest of two suspects after officers responded to a call just after midnight on Saturday. Police were dispatched at 12:41 a.m. to the 400 block of East Prairie Street, where multiple 911 callers reported gunfire. When officers arrived, they found a man lying in the middle of the roadway with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts as medics were en route.
The victim was later identified as 48‑year‑old Dwayne Maurice Darden, a Denton resident. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses at the scene told investigators that moments before the shooting, Darden had been approached by a man in the street, and a heated argument quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to multiple witness accounts, the man confronting Darden was 39‑year‑old Edwin Cain, who had prior disputes with the victim. As the altercation intensified, a second individual, 20‑year‑old Joy Jones, stepped out of a nearby vehicle. Witnesses reported that Jones fired multiple rounds at Darden, striking him and causing the fatal injury.
Police said both suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Officers arriving in the area quickly gathered descriptions from witnesses and began canvassing nearby streets. Investigators later confirmed that Cain and Jones had previous incidents involving the victim, adding context to the confrontation that unfolded in the middle of East Prairie Street.
Within hours, Denton police located and arrested both Cain and Jones. They were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Denton City Jail for processing.
